PRESS RELEASE
Amy
Speace – The Killer in Me
A Raw and Real Artist’s Portrait, New CD due April 2009, Wildflower
Records
Wildflower
Records will soon release the highly anticipated new album The Killer in
Me by
their featured artist, singer/songwriter Amy Speace. Thisraw and real new CD, slated
for April 6, 2009, delves deep into the psyche of this complex and soulful
artist. The Killer in Me is an achingly beautiful collection of 13 songs (with one
hidden track) that takes the listener on an inner journey within Speace’s mind,
heart and soul. In the words of the artist, “the songs are very personal, but
also speak to the uncertainty and longing for hope.”
The
Killer in Me
was engineered by renowned producer/engineer/musician Mitch Easter and recorded
at the Fidelitorium (Easter’s recording studio in Kernersville, NC) where he’s
worked with R.E.M., Pavement, Suzanne Vega and others. The
Killer in Me
boasts a unique sound; it was recorded on analog tape lending it a ‘real’ and
‘lasting’ quality. Speace says she wanted her new album to sound “as live as
possible” and “to capture the
immediacy of how the band played together, tightly honed after all our touring,
to make a record like the ones I loved that were recorded on tape, albums by
The Band, Dylan, The Faces, and Neil Young.” Speace continues, “In mostly
keeping the first or second take of each song the album captures something
organic that I hope is both timely and timeless.”
Speace
is joined by her longtime backing band, The Tearjerks, led by the album’s
producer and lead guitarist James Mastro who has a long history of working with
Easter, and here collaborates with him again on mixing The Killer in Me. Also featured are guest musicians ranging from rock icon Ian
Hunter to up-and-coming folk singer, 17-year old Anthony DaCosta.
Speace’s
The Killer in Me
contains a bonus hidden track Weight of the World, a haunting song that tells
of the heartbreak of losing a brother who was a soldier to war: "The
weight of the world, too heavy to lift/So much to lose, so much to miss/It
doesn't seem fair that an innocent boy/Should have to carry the weight of the
world." Other tracks dig deeper into personal territory, such as This
Love, where
Speace sings that “this love is real” but also that “sometimes love is not
enough/sometimes time is all you need.”
The Killer in Me
is already winning over the critics; Amy
Speace was selected as a finalist in the Folk/Singer Songwriter Category for
the 2008 Independent Music Awards. She was also voted as one of “16 TO
WATCH IN 2008" by WFUV radio
NYC. The
Killer in Me follows Speace’s widely-lauded previous album Songs for
Bright Street (Wildflower
Records,2006). In a
review of that album, Barry Mazor of The Village Voice wrote, "The
talented Ms. Speace is lately taking her Americana away from twangy
contemplation toward tangy confrontation. Paste magazine has discovered her,
and you should too... she’s well worth checking out." Speace recently had
the honor of performing at Joe’s Pub’s 10th Anniversary Gala (October
2008) with such artists as Shawn Colvin, Jimmy Webb, Mary Gauthier, and Judy
Collins.
The Killer in Me
is released on April 6, 2009 through Wildflower
Records and distributed via ADA Global.
