Grammy's rundown: Was Lizzo robbed?
Billie Eilish won big at the Grammy’s this year. Perhaps to be expected, since her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? was a commercial and critical success all over the world. But should we spread the love a little more? Or does Eilish really deserve the five awards she took home after this weekend?
The award where this question becomes really nagging is that of Best New Artist. Eilish is a star, that much is certain - her album and performances have really racked up a lot of attention and she’s certainly a good indication of the zeitgeist of today’s pop landscape… But Lizzo is all those things, and so much more.
Lizzo represents a not-so-quiet confidence which has been sorely lacking in the industry in young women. She sings about self-love, body confidence, getting over breakups, partying with friends - all while owning her status as a fat black woman;oh, and playing the flute.
Recognising Lizzo’s achievements this past year would have been a way of accepting this new acceptance into the mainstream, acknowledging the missteps that the music industry has been responsible for along the way, and marking the beginning of a new era of pop music, one in which shameless confidence and self love in marginalised groups is celebrated. Maybe next year…?
Other big winners were prog metal act Tool, with their song ‘7empest’, Gary Clark Jr’s ‘This Land’ (winning out over competition from Brittany Howard), and Anderson.Paak in multiple categories.
