Happy Pride from us here at Fifth Element!
In the midst of global upheaval, activism and protest, and just the overwhelming stress of lockdown and quarantine, it’s somewhat easy to forget that it’s still Pride month! Particularly since a certain well-known children’s books author has tried her best to make it seem like a wholly un-celebratory time for the LGBTQ+ community right now.
(N.B. If you are trans, you belong. We see you. We love you.)
Here at Fifth Element, we want to try to celebrate Pride with as much gusto as is possible right now. For sure, this will look different from other Pride months in the past, but since Pride was originally a riot and a protest, it’s also looking scarily similar.
(Another side note: if you are protesting, please be responsible - wear a mask, only go once every two weeks and socially distance as much as possible to avoid spreading the virus)
So, yes, Pride is weird this year. But there’s still plenty to celebrate. Spotify have a great playlist called “Black, Queer and Proud”, which you can use to find loads of great new artists and support the #BLM movement at the same time. From our very own roster, you can listen to James Billett’s emotional gay anthem, ‘Faith Over Family’ which tackles some difficult themes surrounding gayness and acceptance - or you can rock out with Bang Bang Romeo for a fun and/or angry time! Rachael Sage is also queer and has just released her deeply personal album, Character, which is a beautiful meditation on gratitude.
You can find all of those artists and more in our Pride playlist, which is linked below! Happy Pride everybody!
