Brutus and Cult of Luna wow at Electric Ballroom in a metal-fuelled night!
Cult of Luna decided to bring along new kids on the post-metal block, Brutus, to support them on their tour of Europe.
Brutus have been making waves in the metal world recently since the video of them performing their song ‘War’ live in the studio at Rain City went viral, garnering 468k views to date. Particularly impressive is that their frontwoman is also their drummer - Stefanie bashes out blast beats and sings along to complex drumming patterns in everything from ethereal tones to a full-on growl. Their set was truly outstanding and I really look forward to these guys having their own headline tour before too long.
Cult of Luna took to the stage in a cloud of dry ice, totally back-lit so that they appeared as silhouettes for the entire gig. Their music is the sort you can really get lost in - each song is over ten minutes long and they blend into each other. It’s not the sort of metal you can mosh to, it’s just kind of beautiful. And with seven band members, there’s certainly enough going on that you can just tune into the music and tune out of everything else.
NIghtwalkers is a set stand out, cementing the eerie and atmospheric mood, that this band always manage to nail on record, into their live performance. There is no moshing here. We must just let the music wash over us as it builds to its climax. Finishing with The Fall is a perfect choice - the thirteen-minute epic closes ‘A Dawn to Fear’, as well as this gig, with all of the beautiful brutality we have come to expect from this band of contrasts.
